Maths Olympiad. Kearsney College Shines at South African Mathematics Olympiad.
Kearsney College has once again affirmed its reputation for academic excellence. The school has been named the top school in KwaZulu-Natal in the prestigious South African Mathematics Olympiad (SAMO) — for the sixth consecutive year.
Thomas Hagspihl, chair of SAMO, praised the school’s sustained success, noting that it also reflects the strength of its mathematics teaching.
“Kearsney has done exceptionally well again this year,” Hagspihl said. “They are clearly teaching not only the curriculum, but also introducing challenging problems to extend and stimulate. Without training, pupils will struggle for success in the Olympiad.”
At the national awards ceremony in Johannesburg, Kearsney was recognized as the top-performing school in KZN for the sixth consecutive year. They achieved an impressive third place overall in South Africa.
Adding to this achievement, Kearsney students Thomas Schulze, Mukona Marageni, and Shavanth Chelladu were ranked among the Top 100 candidates nationally after completing the demanding third-round paper. Marageni further distinguished himself by being named the third-best senior student in KwaZulu-Natal.
The school’s depth of talent was also evident at the Interprovincial South African Mathematics Team Competition. Matthew Behrens was also recognised as the top senior student on the KZN Siyanqoba team.
Kearsney attributes this remarkable record of success to the dedication and expertise of its mathematics department. Its commitment also continues to inspire and empower students to excel at the highest levels.
