Jody Momple Cup – St Charles College, what a hat-trick!

Jody Momple Cup. âš½ St Charles College 1st Team Football.

All roads led to Hilton College for the prestigious Jody Momple Cup (formerly the FA Cup). 24 Boys’ teams gathered in pursuit of glory. St Charles College, representing Pietermaritzburg, was drawn into Group G. They kicked off their campaign on Etheridge Field against Treverton High.

The Saints made an emphatic statement with a 4–0 victory, led by a clinical hat-trick from Gubhuza Mlambo, whose finishing was nothing short of sublime.

With only the top team from each group advancing to the Cup quarterfinals, the next match against Edendale was a must-win. The game was a tense, back-and-forth affair. St Charles took the lead, but Edendale responded, and at full-time, the score was level. The match went to penalties, where the Saints showed nerves of steel—converting every shot with precision.

Sunday Showdowns: Knockout Brilliance

Sunday brought the knockout rounds, and St Charles faced a tricky opponent in ML Sultan. Rising to the occasion, the boys played attractive, attacking football, dominating possession and creating chance after chance. Their persistence paid off when they earned a penalty, and Captain Sithole coolly slotted it home, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Semi-Final Thriller vs Michaelhouse

The semi-final clash against Michaelhouse promised fireworks—and delivered. St Charles came out firing, creating several clear chances in the opening ten minutes. Despite their dominance, the score remained 0–0 at halftime.

Early in the second half, the Saints won a corner, and Ethan Apollos rose at the far post to head home a brilliant goal, putting St Charles ahead. But with just three minutes left, Michaelhouse found an equaliser, forcing the match into penalties.

In the shootout, it wasn’t to be for the boys from Harwin Road, who fell 4–2 from the spot, bringing their spirited run to an end.

A campaign full of heart, skill, and unforgettable moments—St Charles College can hold their heads high.
