This past Saturday the Glenwood High School 1st XI Cricket team took on St Charles College in a 50 Over match at Glenwood.
Due to rain and heavy storms, Glenwood’s boys had missed out on their matches versus Hilton the previous weekend and were eager to get back on the park this Saturday. Our grounds man, Mr. Jason Job, had prepared a belter of a cricket pitch and we looked set for a competitive match.
Glenwood lost the toss with St Charles electing to bat first. Glenwood started well with opening bowlers and brothers, Jaden and Jordan Hendrikse, keeping things tight and not allowing for any easy runs. Glenwood didn’t manage to take quick wickets but maintained constant pressure in the field, restricting runs and forcing St Charles to settle for singles. Glenwood then picked up 7 wickets in the last 8 overs of the innings to restrict St Charles to 182-8 in their 50 Overs. Alex Pillay being chief destroyer finishing with bowling figures of 5-45.
Glenwood’s chase started off well with openers Francis Moran and Thamsanqa Khumalo putting on 70 runs for the opening stand. Another 50 run partnership between Moran and now Hayden Rossouw kept the scoreboard moving forward nicely before Rossouw was dismissed with the score on 122-2. Alex Pillay had a short stay at the crease, before Captain Jaden Hendrikse joined in form Moran to see Glenwood to Victory. A final partnership worth 57 with Hendrikse firing 30 off 26 balls and opening batsman Moran finishing unbeaten on 94*. A superb batting display from the youngster who showed great discipline and maturity with the way he constructed his innings, helping his team to a comprehensive victory by 7 wickets.
