Grade 11 Consumer Studies. In the Consumer Studies kitchen at Grantleigh schools, the aroma of sugar and success filled the air as Grade 11 learners took on the classic culinary challenge of making meringues—a task known for testing both precision and patience.
As part of their practical curriculum, students were guided through the delicate process of whipping egg whites to stiff peaks, carefully incorporating sugar, and perfecting the baking technique to achieve light, airy textures. Despite the complexity of the task, the learners rose to the occasion with enthusiasm and determination.
Their final creations? Beautifully crisp-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside meringues that not only met the brief but exceeded expectations in both appearance and taste.
“These practical lessons are about more than just cooking,” said their Consumer Studies educator, Ms Joni Maree. “They’re about learning discipline, time management, and attention to detail—skills that go far beyond the classroom.”
The successful outcome was a proud moment for both the learners and their teacher, who witnessed not just culinary skill, but confidence, teamwork, and pride in execution.
