Head Girl 2025 – St Dominics Newcastle

Head Girl 2025. Like we did the past years, schoolsthatrock again chat to the Head Leaders of High Schools in South Africa this year. Today we talk to Husna Docrat, Head Girl 2025 of St Dominics Newcastle, KZN.

“As Head Girl 2025, I am looking forward to making a meaningful impact in St Dominic’s. I look forward to creating a positive environment where all the learners feel connected and supported. I am excited about the opportunity to be a role model and encouraging all my peers. On a more personal level, I am looking forward to growing as a leader –  becoming more confident in my decision-making, handling challenges with resilience and learning valuable skills that can carry me beyond this role.

My personal goals for this year revolve around growth, impact, and legacy. I would also like to lead with confidence and integrity and develop stronger leadership skills. I build meaningful connections that will last a lifetime, overcome challenges with resilience, all while maintaining my responsibilities and academics. My goals for my school are to promote unity and “Gees”, encourage learners to speak up, enhance well-being and mental health, leave a positive legacy and support the growth of the leaders to follow.

Qualities of St Dominics Newcastle

One of the main qualities of St Dominics Newcastle that stand out for me is the school spirit and tradition. St Dominics has over 130 years’ worth of tradition, and it is still prevalent in students today. Academic, sports and cultural excellence and growth is encouraged, allowing learners to excel in what they enjoy. We have a strong sense of community whereby learners feel welcomed and supported by the teachers. One of the turning points in my schooling career was when all the staff stood by me. They understood and believed in me during the most difficult period in my Grade 11 year. That allowed me to realise how caring and supportive the teachers at St Dominics truly are. We are a very diverse and inclusive school that makes learners feel included in every aspect.

I would like to see adjustments at our school that enhance the overall experience for learners by strengthening school spirit. I also want to create more opportunities for learners by expanding extracurricular activities, school clubs, etc

Convincing someone to make St Dominics their school of choice, I would highlight my school’s unique strengths and opportunities it offers, focusing on what makes it stand out. I would mention my school’s strong academic excellence and all the support shown to learners by the teachers. I would also highlight the opportunities that it offers, such as the involvement in the science expo, the wide variety of subject choices, and others. Furthermore I would not fail to mention our schools’ unique strengths spirit and that our school is not just academics, it is also about having fun. We also focus on personal growth and well-being by implementing a mentorship program. This is a school where you will be challenged, supported and inspired every day.

Leadership qualities

One of my strongest leadership qualities is my ability to inspire and empower others. As Head Girl 2025 as well as the chairperson for the St Dominics Girls Power Circle, I believe in bringing out the best in people by encouraging them to step up, believe in themselves, and contribute meaningfully. I strive to create an environment where everyone feels valued, heard and motivated to work toward a common goal. I lead with a balance of confidence and empathy – ensuring that I make a firm decision while also understanding and supporting those around me. Finally I also believe that true leadership is not about being the loudest voice in the room but rather about lifting others up and setting an example through my actions and words.

Getting collaboration and commitment from my team requires a combination of inspiration, communication and trust. I would lead by example, ensure everyone feels valued and respected, grates a shared vision and a common goal, and encourage open communication. Thankfully my team and I can communicate well, and we have all been committed to our roles in St Dominics.

The person that I look up to the most is my older brother. He has always been a source of strength guidance and inspiration in my life. He always leads by example, showing the importance of hard work, resilience and integrity.

Lately I’ve been daydreaming about those little moments of accomplishments – finishing a big task, receiving a good mark on a test I studied hard for, or seeing a real change happen because of something I worked hard on.

My favourite dish is my mom’s home-cooked butter chicken!

If I were a kitchen article, I would be a tablespoon – because just like a tablespoon measures out the perfect balance of ingredients, I strive to bring the right mix of leadership, kindness, and determination into everything that I do.

My future career? I would like to study Medicine and Surgery at Wits.”
